GLOUCESTER, MA – Nestled on Coles Island in Gloucester MA, a naturally occurring rocky outcrop stood tall above a swale in the landform, offering a perfect opportunity to design the natural pool of our clients’ dreams. The ledge became a jumping rock and the swale was sculpted to follow the form of the ledge below, creating the base of the pool. In keeping with the natural landform of the site, the client worked with us to design a natural pool complete with a massive granite dock, fieldstone terrace, pool coping, and a fire pit, all of locally sourced stone. Native aquatic and marginal plants that thrive in varying depths of water were planted to filter the water, keeping it naturally clean and providing a soft edge condition for the pool. Surrounding native and ornamental plants were chosen to seamlessly connect the pool area to the landscape and Great Marsh beyond, and to provide privacy from the house.
