Very close to the Atlantic, this client’s property catches some pretty serious weather and salt deposition. We chose hardy plants tolerant of coastal seashore conditions where exposure was of concern. In a more protected part of the garden, we created a courtyard entry reminiscent of the house’s original, historic garden. Old photographs were produced and helped to inform the design of this and a large, formal perennial garden and shrub border. A small terrace in bluestone and brick and and overhead custom-built pergola provides a shady spot for the owners to sit and enjoy the formal layout and drifts of flowering plants and trees.
